Siblings withstand storm in fridge

MOORE, Okla. — Brother and sister co-owners of a Chinese takeout restaurant huddled inside a refrigerator to survive Monday’s deadly tornado that claimed 24 lives.

Family members scavenged through Hong Kong Chinese Restaurant Tuesday afternoon at Camden Village shopping center near S.W. 19th and Santa Fe.

The Zhang family moved to America a decade ago from Canton, China. They made Moore their home three years later.

Sherry Zhang said her father, 50-year-old Jia Zhang, and her 56-year-old aunt, Jianci Zhang, withstood the storm unharmed inside the restaurant reduced to rubble. Her father had arrived at the eatery to warn others of the storm.

“It’s terrible,” said 23-year-old Sherry Zhang. “I haven’t seen things like this before.”

Wreckage dangled from Hong Kong’s ceiling, which revealed a partly cloudy sky Tuesday afternoon.

Bamboo shoots and baby corn cans sitting inside a single shopping cart were the salvaged remnants of the restaurant.

The younger Zhang, who was in Norman during the tornado, said the family would claim insurance and probably open a new restaurant. Hong Kong specialized in fried rice and sesame chicken.
