Girl, guardians come forward in hit-and-run

TAHLEQUAH — The Tahlequah Police Department is investigating an accident resulting in a fatality which occurred in the early morning hours of Sunday, July 7, 2013.  Dispatch received a call in reference to the accident at approximately 4:10 a.m. and officers responded to the State Highway 51 Bypass between Stickross Mountain Rd. and West 4th Street. 



Two juvenile males were walking West bound in the East bound lanes of traffic and were struck by a passenger car.  One of the victims succumbed to his injuries sustained from the vehicle at approximately 5:10 a.m.  The second individual is in stable condition and was treated for non-lethal injuries.  The identity of the two individuals is not being released at this time.



The driver, a juvenile female, and her legal guardians came forward earlier this afternoon.  She submitted a statement to officers and granted full access to her vehicle.  Due to her age and the ongoing investigation, the identity of the driver is not being released at this time. 



The investigation into the incident is ongoing.  Several factors are being looked into by the Tahlequah Police Department.  The Area of Impact was determined to be within the inside East bound lane of the State Highway 51 Bypass between 4th Street and Stickross Mountain Road within the city limits of Tahlequah.  The speed limit is 65 M.P.H. along this stretch of the state highway. 



Information gathered during the investigation thus far is the two boys were walking home from Wal-Mart Store #10 and stopped to rest at approximately

4 a.m.  The boys were either kneeling or lying on the roadway when they were struck by the driver’s vehicle.
