Enid 4th-graders headed to NYC

ENID, Okla. — A group of fourth-graders from Prairie View Elementary School is headed to New York City May 8-11.

The Kid Witness News program, written and produced by Lori Painter’s class, has been named one of the four national finalists in the Panasonic Kid Witness News New Vision competition.

“They will be traveling to national competition,” Painter said.

The other three schools the Prairie View students will compete against in New York are from New Jersey, Florida and Colorado. The New Vision Best Video of the Year award will be announced at the 2014 New Vision & Eco-Effect awards ceremony at the Panasonic North American headquarters in Newark, N.J., on May 9. The school that wins the award will represent the United States in the KWN global competition.

Painter and her students get an all-expenses-paid trip for the national competition and the awards ceremony.

Their winning newscast, “TrashNet 2,” was in the style of the old television show, “Dragnet.” It conveyed a message about recycling.

“The story you are about to hear is true,” the announcer began. “The facts were made up to entertain you.”

According to the Panasonic website, Kid Witness News is a hands-on video education program emphasizing team-centered learning. Panasonic provides the students with the latest digital equipment so they can communicate stories important to them.

“Winning teams from across the country will be flown to the NY/NJ area to participate in Winners’ Weekend — a weekend of activities celebrating their accomplishments and to receive top honors at the New Vision Awards ceremony,” Panasonic’s website reads.

Winning teams also get a trophy, banner and recognition on the KWN website.
