NSU golfers lead after 1st round

— Whitney McAteer and Kelsey Kirkpatrick both shot even-par, 72s to lead Northeastern State to a spot in first place after the opening round of the 14th annual NSC Classic on Monday.

McAteer and Kirkpatrick are one shot off the pace set by Harding’s Brittany Marquez, while the RiverHawks own an eight-stroke lead over Southwestern Oklahoma State at Cherry Springs Golf Course.

For NSU, freshman McCandren Lewis carded a 3-over, 75 and is tied for fifth. Alex Koch (79) and Kirsten Degutis (79) both added 79s for the RiverHawks.

Southwestern Oklahoma State was led by Margaret Musser, who shot a 74.

NSU (298) is the only team under the 300 mark while SWOSU sits at 306. Rounding out the top five is Henderson State (312), Harding (315) and Arkansas-Fort Smith (317).

The second and final round of the tournament will tee off at 8 a.m. on Tuesday. NSU golfers will begin teeing off at 9:20.



Sequoyah wins big

HASKELL — Class 3A No. 4 Sequoyah dominated Haskell for the second time this season, beating the Lady Haymakers 12-3 on Monday.

Baylee Ratliff led the Lady Indians, going 4 for 5 with three runs batted in.

Sequoyah will begin postseason play on Thursday at Keys in a 3A district tournament.



THS wins again

The upstart Tahlequah volleyball team won its 12th straight match on Monday, beating Regent Prep 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-14). The Lady Tigers improved to 17-8.

No other information was provided.



Games rained out

Keys and Hulbert both had softball games rained out on Monday. Keys was slated to host Wagoner, while Hulbert was to host Porter. Neither game will be made up with postseason play starting on Thursday for both teams.

Hulbert will travel and play at Chouteau in a 2A district tournament, while Keys will host Sequoyah.

Tahlequah’s softball game against Fort Gibson was canceled. Instead, the Lady Tigers will take on Grove in District 5A-3 play on Tuesday with first place on the line.
