ORU advances to CIT quarterfinals

State briefs

TULSA — An 18-5 Oral Roberts run, spanning more than eight minutes in the first half, was all the distance the Golden Eagles (20-14) would need to push past the Anteaters of UC Irvine (21-16) in a 76-62 victory on Monday night in the second round of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament at the Mabee Center.

The first four points of the game went to ORU and the Golden Eagles never trailed in the game, winning their 10th home game of the season and reaching 20 wins for the second year in a row and the seventh time in the last nine years under Coach Scott Sutton.

Led by another double-double from Steven Roundtree, ORU shot 42 percent (26-61) for the game, including a sizzling 53 percent in the first half as they opened up an 11-point lead at the break. Roundtree had 21 points and 13 rebounds, along with a team high four assists. Shawn Glover added 16 points and Damen Bell-Holter had 10.

UC Irvine got 15 points from Will Davis II, 13 from Michael Wilder and 11 from Chris McNealy.

OU women’s gymnasts top seed in NCAA Regional

NORMAN — The Oklahoma women’s gymnastics team is the top seed for the NCAA Regional completion in Norman.

The Sooners will host Stanford, Penn State, Washington, Iowa and Southern Utah on Saturday, April 6, at the Lloyd Noble Center on the OU campus.

The Sooners won their fifth Big 12 title in the past six years last weekend with OU winning every individual title and junior Taylor Spears being named Big 12 Gymnast of the Year.

OU has also won three straight NCAA Regional titles and are looking for a 10th-straight NCAA Championship appearance.

The top two teams from each of the six regionals around the country will advance to the NCAA Championships scheduled for April 19 at UCLA.

OU’s Evans is Big 12 Newcomer of the Week

NORMAN — University of Oklahoma freshman relief pitcher Jacob Evans is the Big 12 Baseball Conference’s Newcomer of the Week.

Evans was selected Monday after picking up a win and a save last week while throwing 8.2 innings of scoreless relief and racking up nine strikeouts.

Evans got the Sooners out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth inning of Saturday’s win over TCU to pick up the save — then threw two scoreless innings on Sunday to pick up his fourth win of the season.
