NSU tennis wins home opener

The No. 25-ranked Northeastern State women’s tennis team kicked off the home portion of its schedule with a 7-0 victory over East Central Tuesday afternoon at the NSU Tennis Complex.

The RiverHawks improved to 4-1 on the year, while the Lady Tigers dropped to 1-4. ECU did not have a complete lineup, so the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles flights were not contested.

Both doubles matches were 8-0 decisions in favor of the RiverHawks, while NSU did not drop a set in singles competition.

Sophomore Kristina Savchenkov, the No. 49-ranked singles player in the nation and the reigning MIAA Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week, joined senior Martina Bruzikova, junior Barbora Jirickova and freshman Maria Lodge with two wins apiece. Sophomore Lucia Cerchlanova also picked up a straight-set singles triumph.

NSU is now scheduled to face Newman University at 1 p.m. Friday in Wichita, Kan.

Women’s Golf Finishes Fourth in Texas

SAN ANTONIO — The Northeastern State women’s golf team finished fourth after Tuesday’s final round of the Lady Rattler Invitational at the Dominion Country Club.

NSU freshman Sofia Castiello finished third individually out of 93 players. She shot a final-round score of 76 to end the tournament with an overall score of 150.

Freshman Baylee Price finished the tournament tied for fifth after shooting the lowest final-round score of 73 for the RiverHawks. Price tabbed an overall score of 152.

Fifth-ranked St. Edward’s won the tournament after concluding with a score of 599. No. 3 Tarleton State (618) picked up second while No. 22 Chico State (629) took third. The RiverHawks defeated three schools (No. 14 Dallas Baptist, No. 20 Newman, No. 23 Cameron) that are nationally ranked and three others (Hawaii-Hilo, West Texas A&M, Southwestern Oklahoma State) that are receiving votes in the national polls.

Northeastern State will be back in action on March 10-11 at the UCO Spring Classic hosted at the Kickingbird Country Club in Edmond.
