Former Sequoyah QB headed to Baltimore

Sequoyah grad Nathan Stanley sat through the draft knowing he’d go somewhere and the Baltimore Ravens made good on what he said they promised him by extending him a free agent deal.

Stanley accepted and will report to the Ravens mini-camp on Thursday.

“They told me they weren’t going to draft a quarterback but it would be their No.1  free agent priority,” Stanley said. “As soon as the draft was over, they called and offered me.”

San Diego, Houston and Denver had also spoke to the former Indian who originally signed, redshirted and played two seasons at Mississippi, making a brief 2010 Cotton Bowl appearance against Oklahoma State, before transferring to Southeastern Louisiana in 2011.

In 2012, his first year as a starter, Stanley threw for 1,952 yards and nine touchdowns in helping Southeastern to a 5-6 record and a 5-2 mark in the Southland Conference. He threw for a season-high 280 yards against UT Martin before tossing for 247 yards and a touchdown in a come-from-behind victory over nationally-ranked McNeese State. He played in the East-West Shrine Game in January.

“I did my homework on roster needs and such on all those teams and felt that Baltimore was my best opportunity,” he said. “There’s not as high a level of expectation as there is on draft picks but I look at it as an opportunity to do what I can to earn a spot on the roster and that’s all I can ask for is a chance.”

Stanley threw for 2,153 yards and 32 TDs in 2007.
