Oral Roberts blanks OU

TULSA — Senior Pepe Gomez delivered the second complete game shutout by an Oral Roberts University pitcher in the last three games as the Golden Eagles blanked No. 28 Oklahoma on Tuesday evening 3-0 at J.L. Johnson Stadium.

Gomez (2-2) allowed just five hits and struck out five to help move ORU’s overall mark to 11-12, while the Sooners dropped to 18-7 on the year. It was Gomez’s first complete game and longest outing as a Golden Eagle.

It was the first time the Golden Eagles have beaten the Sooners since June 4, 2011, when ORU won 7-0 at the Fort Worth Regional. The victory also snapped a five-game losing skid against Oklahoma.

Six different Golden Eagles recorded singles in the contest, including a RBI single by Dean Wilson in the bottom of the second to put the Golden Eagles up 1-0.

In sixth inning, the Golden Eagles plated their other two runs of the evening as Logan Domenico drew a four-pitch walk with the bases loaded to push in Jose Trevino and Matt Brandy scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Audie Afenir, extending the lead to 3-0.

Trevino, Domenico, Afenir and Brandon Healy each picked up hits in the contest.

Craig Aikin and Niko Buentello each picked up a hit and walk in the loss for the Sooners. OU used four pitchers with Robert Tasin (2-1) taking the loss after going 3.2 innings with four hits and a run scored.

Despite three errors in the game, the Golden Eagles continue to turn the double play, with two against the Sooners, including a double play started by Gomez in the top of the seventh inning. ORU has a total of 26 double plays this season.

It will be a quick turnaround for the Golden Eagles as they host Wichita State at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday at J.L. Johnson Stadium.
