New look for Hulbert district tourney

Local and state briefs

From staff and wire reports

— When Class 2A basketball playoff assignments came out last week, Hulbert was looking at two No. 1 seeds for both its boys and girls basketball teams.

That hit a snag.

Not long after the playoff pairings were announced, Hulbert coach Rick Ott got a call from the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association, saying the three-school field had changed.

“They called me and said it was a typo on their end,” Ott said. “But through the grapevine, I heard you can’t have two ranked teams in the same district, and that would have been the case with Oklahoma Union and Kiefer.”

Thus, with the gaffe from the OSSAA, some districts redrawn in the Area II playoffs. Instead of it being Hulbert, Commerce and Porter at Rider Fieldhouse, Hulbert will now welcome Porter and Kiefer — a school ranked in both boys and girls polls.

“It is what it is,” Ott said. “They’re not going to change it now. We’re still excited to host it.”

Both Hulbert teams will take on Porter on Feb. 21, and the winners will advance to take on Kiefer the next night. The losers will be eliminated from playoff contention.

Against Bishop Kelley, Cameron Jumper won a deciding matchup to propel Keys to victory. Jace Dry did the same for the Cougars against Webster.

Jumper posted two wins in both duals.

Keys’ next action will be on Feb. 21 at Class 3A regionals at Pawhuska.

Tulsa pulls away from East Carolina to win

TULSA — James Woodard scored 21 points to lead Tulsa to a 76-58 win over East Carolina on Thursday.

Shaquille Harrison added 11 points and Stevie Repichowski and Brandon Swannegan came off the bench to add 13 and 10 respectively, for the Golden Hurricanes (12-12, 7-3 Conference USA).

Woodard had seven rebounds as Tulsa dominated the boards 41-26.

Paris Roberts-Campbell had 17 to lead the Pirates (13-12, 2-8). Akeem Richmond added 17 and Caleb White 10.

Tulsa shot 50 percent in the first half, scoring the last four points to lead 33-29.

East Carolina took a 45-44 lead with 11:48 to go when Repichowski sparked a 7-0 burst with a layup and a 3-pointer. Woodard then scored eight straight points to open a 10-run for a 70-53 lead with 3:07 to go. He made a layup, a 3 and three free throws on consecutive possessions.

Glover, Oral Roberts beat Houston Baptist

HOUSTON — Shawn Glover scored 23 points on 11-of-15 shooting — topping the 1,000-point plateau at Oral Roberts — as the Golden Eagles beat Houston Baptist 80-66 Thursday night.

After falling behind 9-4 in the first 3 minutes of the game, Oral Roberts (13-12, 7-5 Southland Conference) used a 27-6 run to blow the game open. The Golden Eagles led by double-digits the rest of the way and by as many as 22 in the second half.

ORU tied a season high by making 33 field goals while shooting 55 percent from the floor and hitting 8 of 17 from 3-point range. Its 17 assists also tied a season high.

Rob Lewis was the only Houston Baptist (4-21, 1-12) player to score in double figures, finishing with 19 points, as the Huskies shot just 35.7 percent (20 of 56) from the field.

Korey Billbury added 12 points and nine rebounds for ORU.
