TAHLEQUAH — Cherokee County sheriff’s deputies will offer free rides home to county residents who celebrate with alcohol on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

The program is available only to those who call deputies before choosing to drive if they have consumed alcohol. Cherokee County Undersheriff Jason Chennault said anyone who is stopped and found to be drunk will not have the option of getting a free ride home.

“At that point, it will be too late; the offer only stands if you call before getting behind the wheel,” he said. “You’ll only be getting a free ride to jail if you choose to drive and you are stopped by a deputy.”

Those who want to take advantage of the ride home within Cherokee County can call (918) 456-2583. The offer is available beginning at 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, and continues until 2 a.m. the following morning, Dec. 25 and Jan. 1.
