The United Keetoowah Band Tribal Veterans department will hold a benefit gourd dance Saturday, Feb. 15 beginning at noon. The dance will break at 5 p.m. and then resume from 6 to 7 p.m.
The dance will be held at the Wellness Center, at the UKB Tribal Complex,18529 W. Keetoowah Circle.
Concessions and 50/50 drawings will be available for purchase.
The purpose of this gourd dance is to add to the Veterans Emergency Fund.
This fund was established last year and is used for veterans who may need food, gasoline or other immediate needs when there is no funding immediately available through other sources such as UKB Housing, Human Services, General Assistance, LIHEAP, and Family Services.
Gourd dance staff includes: Ed Ketcher, head gourd dancer, Stilwell; Mary Kaulay, head lady dancer, Checotah; Kituwah Intertribal singers, head singers, Tahlequah; Chuck Bread, arena director, Tahlequah; Jacob Littledave, master of ceremonies, Tahlequah; and United Keetoowah Veterans Honor Guard, color guard.
All gourd dancers and spectators are welcome.
Attendees are encouraged to bring your lawn chairs.
Coordinating the event is UKB Tribal Veterans Representative Jacob Littledave.
Assisting veterans is something Littledave does on a daily basis. A three-time Purple Heart recipient, Littledave now focuses his energies on helping veterans file claims for veterans’ benefits, social security, widow pensions, and educational benefits for veterans’ children.
Since he began working for the tribe about four years ago, Littledave has assisted scores of veterans; helping many of them get benefits they had not been able to get on their own.
