Tahlequah churches team up for Lenten services

TAHLEQUAH — The Clergy Fellowship of Cherokee County will sponsor a number of events for those who wish to commemorate the holy season of Lent.

Lent is the season during which Christians prepare for Christ’s sacrifice. It is the 40 days before Easter, not counting Sundays. Many Christians give up something for Lent.

Beginning Thursday, March 13, the Clergy Fellowship will sponsor a series of Lenten lunches, held in the atrium of First United Methodist Church, 300 W. Delaware. The lunches will begin at noon, and end by 12:45 p.m. Participants should bring a sack lunch; dessert and drinks will be provided.

A different pastor will speak at each luncheon. The schedule of speakers is: March 13, Rev. James Graham of First United Methodist; March 20, Rev. Jan Condren of First Presbyterian Church; March 27, Mother Debora Jennings of St. Basil’s Episcopal Church; April 3, Brother Buddy Hunt of First Baptist Church; and April 10, Rev. Susan Hamilton of Unitarian Universalist Congregation.

On Good Friday, April 18, a Community Good Friday service will be held at First United Methodist Church. This service will center on the Stations of the Cross.

The Clergy Fellowship of Cherokee County is an ecumenical effort to provide support and fellowship for clergy, and to foster social justice, interfaith education, and service in our community.

For more information, contact Rev. Jan Condren, First Presbyterian Church, at (918) 772-0580.
