TAHLEQUAH DAILY PRESS

Maybe it's the unusually high level of excitement over this year's presidential election, or perhaps the blame lies with issues of a more local nature. It could be just as simple as people suddenly finding their voice.

Whatever the case, more and more area residents are speaking out and voicing their opinions these days. And when they contribute their viewpoints to a story in their local newspaper, they're not only helping create a story that's imminently more readable, but they're generating more widespread interest in the topic at hand.

Now more than ever, it's important that people become involved in the issues that concern them, and their children, and their children's children. The focus might be as local as which day care center is best suited to your children's needs, or it might be on how hot spots in various parts of the world will affect the tour of duty for a much-loved son or daughter in the military. Or it might be an issue that spans every demographic -- from pollution of the Illinois River, to global climate change.

When people are engaged in what's going on around them, they can make a difference. They can change things. They can make the world better for the next generation. Or at least, they can make their community better for the next generation.

With that in mind, most reputable community newspapers are actively soliciting input from their readers. We're not talking about "professional" opinions, necessarily, although that's part of the mix, too. We're talking about what you -- the average person on the street -- thinks of any given subject. What you think does matter.

For the past few years, the Daily Press has tried to include such "layman's opinions" in most of the stories we do. Readers have told us they appreciate that format, and indeed, several have inquired lately as to how they can become one of the folks who is occasionally solicited for comment.

Actually, it's quite easy. Just get on our e-mail list!

We know that from time to time, our "regular" contributors may be too busy, or may simply feel like they've spoken out too much lately. They may decide it's someone else's turn for a while. That someone could be you!

The more people who are willing to join in the dialogue, the more diverse our opinion base will be -- and the more interesting the resulting stories will be for our readers. And if you think you don't have much to say, think again: That's what several of our regular contributors said at first. But later, once they became involved, they realized they did have something to offer -- in many cases, something quite valuable.

Let us know what you think! Simply e-mail us at news@tahlequahdailypress.com, and let us know you want to join the "community conversation." That will automatically get you on an e-mail list for various stories we're planning. From time to time, you'll get an e-mail from one of our reporters, soliciting comment on a particular topic. You can choose to participate in a given discussion, or not; it's strictly up to you. All you need to do is e-mail us back by the given deadline, and depending on space availability and number of responses received, your voice could be heard.

If you'd like to limit the topics for which you're solicited, you can do that, too. Simply tell us to confine your queries to, say, politics; animal issues; environmental topics; local business; or anything you want. Then we won't bother you with subjects that don't interest you.

So get on the bandwagon today, and start talking. Believe it or not, we -- and many others -- are waiting to hear from you.
