How to go quietly into that good night

Getting children to go to bed can be a nightmare for parents and children.

Experts say if you want your nighttime tyrants to become beautiful dreamers, consider their day – and their lifestyle.

Parents who establish a consistent bedtime and a routine that includes, say, prayer time and reading, find their children are more content and relaxed when it’s time for lights out. A healthy meal, a healthy home and a healthy family relationship all lead to a good night’s sleep.

One consideration is the child’s bedroom. Is his bed comfortable and clean? Is the bedroom a relaxing environment or a messy one? Is bedtime around the home hectic, with yelling and loud TV or music, or is everyone gearing down for the night? Do the kids watch TV or stay up on their computer until late? Limits can help children feel secure and make better decisions for themselves as they grow.

Is the child worried about a school or sporting event, exam or other activity that’s keeping her stressed and awake? Is she being bullied by a child or teacher? And what about eating before bedtime? Lots of soda pop, sweets with caffeine or too much food, will make going to sleep a challenge.

Routines and relationships established with infants can carry over throughout their lifetime, even with their own children.

Dr. Yahya Ahmad, pediatrician with NeoHealth, said a healthy dinner and a routine in the evening will help children get to sleep.

“Establish an hour without forcing your children,” he said. “If you force kids or are mean, it doesn’t work.”

Kids are always listening, he said.

“If you’re up watching TV or arguing, they’ll hear it. If you’re fighting, they’ll stay awake and worry,” he said.

Dinner should be a routine, he added.

“Eat dinner at 6:30 and no later than 7 p.m.,” Ahmed suggested. “Nothing heavy or spicy that will upset the stomach.”

Milk is especially good at bedtime.

“Hot or cold, milk is good for helping you sleep,” he said. “It has phenalalyn, with amino acids that can help.”

Medications are never used for helping children sleep, unless the child has been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, he said.
