That’s one reason Tahlequah’s city government is taking steps to build a stormwater management program.
But the prevailing reason may be that the state and federal government have mandated cities across the country have a plan in place within the next five years. Julie Shannon, the city’s director of planning and development, has been given the task of spearheading the local program.
The project reached a new level earlier this month when Shannon presented a proposed ordinance that creates a new chapter in the city code. The ordinance was on the last city council agenda for discussion only, and may be considered when the board meets again next week. Representatives of the city of Muskogee shared information with local officials about their stormwater management approach. Oklahoma Scenic Rivers Commission Administrator Ed Fite presented Mayor Ken Purdy with a $10,000 check from his agency to help get Tahlequah’s stormwater management program off the ground. “There are two goals [of the stormwater management program],” Shannon said. “You want to get the water out, but you also want it to be free of pollutants, if at all possible.” Shannon said the world has plenty of chemicals in it now, and there are many ways for those chemicals to make their way into the water supply. Tahlequah’s program features a unique component. “We’re the only city required to have a monitoring program,” Shannon explained. The monitoring checks flow and the number of sediment and toxins that drain into the water when it rains.
