Cherokee County Sheriff Norman Fisher, left, shows Sheriff’s Deputy Waylon Tarkington an area on the map where a burglary recently occurred. Fisher and his deputies use a Neighborhood Watch program and other methods in hopes of cutting down the number of burglaries in the county.

Take a bite out of crime this month!
October is National Crime Prevention Month, and a few simple steps can keep you from becoming a victim.

Local law enforcement would like to see all of us become “crime dogs” and take a bite out of crime.

They want us to adopt McGruff’s philosophy and help fight the war on crime year-round, but especially during October, which is National Crime Prevention Month.

Area residents are urged to take note of what’s going around their homes and businesses and report suspicious activity.

McGruff was created by the Advertising Council Inc. in 1980 and has made thousands of appearances. He has encouraged people to join Neighborhood Watch and clean up their neighborhoods.

Over the past three years, Police Chief Steve Farmer has adopted another nationally-known program that includes crime prevention in its message. Tahlequah Night Out is based on the National Night Out campaign and gives local residents an opportunity to get acquainted with neighbors and send a message to criminals.

“It’s [Tahlequah Night Out] grown in number of participants each year,” he said. “The officers visit each of the block parties and learn about the concerns of people who live and work in our city.”

Sheriff Norman Fisher said he’s always advocated public involvement in crime prevention.

“We [law enforcement] can’t be everywhere all the time,” he said. “I’ve always encouraged the public to call us if they see or hear something suspicious.”

Fisher said sheriff’s deputies would rather make a false alarm call than arrive and find out someone’s entered a home and stolen a lot of property.

Farmer said local residents can take some common-sense steps to make their home look less vulnerable.

“Doing things like having a trusted neighbor pick up mail and/or newspapers and setting indoor lights on a timer will make a house look like someone’s home,” he said.

Officials said an occupied home is less likely to be hit by burglars.

Farmer has also started a TPD tip line for people to call and leave information. He urges people to call 239-8477 (TIPS), if they don’t want to call the department’s main number.

Fisher said the sheriff’s office has initiated Neighborhood Watch programs in some rural communities across the county.

He said the county has a lot of area, and there are times when few deputies are on duty.
