Two hurt in fiery crash on S.H. 10

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says alcohol played a role in a fiery car crash Tuesday afternoon on State Highway 10, about 8-1/2 miles north of Tahlequah.

An OHP report states Jason E. Murphy, 22, was driving a 1997 Lexus SC3 north on S.H. 10 at a high rate of speed when the car swerved off the road, slid across a parking area, and struck a pole on the passenger side. After impact with the pole, the car continued north, striking a large boulder and another pole before coming to a rest and catching fire.

Vickie J. Kilpatrick, 35, a passenger in the vehicle, was partially ejected through the passenger window. Witnesses said that because the car caught fire, the two victims had to be pulled from the vehicle before emergency personnel arrived.

Kilpatrick was taken to Tahlequah City Hospital by TCH EMS, then transported by EagleMed to St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa, where she was admitted in critical condition with trunk internal and head injuries.

Murphy was transported by TCH EMS to Tahlequah City Hospital and admitted in stable condition for a head injury.

The OHP report states Murphy smelled of alcoholic beverages, and was allegedly drinking before the crash, which impaired his ability to drive. The cause of the crash is listed as driving under the influence/driving while intoxicated.

Neither of the victims were wearing a seat belt, according to the report. The car was equipped with airbags, but the deteriorated condition of the vehicle prevented the trooper from determining whether they had deployed.

The crash was investigated by OHP Trooper Hank Jenks of the Aircraft Division. The Illinois River Volunteer Fire Department, TCH EMS, Cherokee County sheriff’s deputies and Oklahoma Scenic Rivers Commission rangers assisted at the scene.
