Where is our pride?

Editor, Daily Press:

Back in 1984, not only in Tahlequah, but over the entire nation, it was pretty common for graduating seniors to let off steam by drinking and driving and some ending up in the morgue, a life-changing moment for any family, city, or even the entire nation.

There was a thoughtful lady in our city who decided to do something about it. Her name? Mrs. Johnson. She came up with the idea of “Save a Senior” by creating a safe, fun and entertaining place where any graduating senior could spend the entire night, ending with a breakfast the following morning. It did not cost the senior a dime. The only requirement: No going in and out, and no booze. It was a smashing success and it is still happening today.

Friday, April 18, to keep this great idea alive, and being able to present our seniors with a great evening, the Save-a-Senior committee held a spaghetti and meat ball dinner to raise funds for the event.

There are 236 seniors graduating in May. Less than 50 parents showed up for the dinner. Two school board members, two members of the school administration, four seniors, two teachers and one city councilor attended. This is really sorry.

Linda and I have no ax to grind – we have no children in school here – just a concern for our future! And these seniors are our future, make no mistake about it. Where is the school pride? Where is the enthusiasm students should have for their school, family, city, and self? Are we, as a community, content with the fact that there are 75 or more girls in the district, ages 14 and up, who are pregnant? That our attendance at athletic events is pitifully small? That pep rallies are ho-hum?

Are we satisfied as a community with this apathy? Do we care that our school district has one of the lowest budgets to educate not only Tahlequah students, but nine dependent K-8 schools that feed into our system? Are we interested in changing this situation, or are we content with the way things are?

Want to see a vibrant, enthusiastically supported school? Go no further than just south of town to Sequoyah. Yes, I know that it is supported by the Cherokee Nation, but the spirit comes from students, parents, and other family members. It is called pride.
