At Tahlequah’s July 1 council meeting, litter in Norris Park was a major subject. The skateboarders and others who use the park must learn by example. If you just go north on Water Street from Norris Park, there is one of those metal garbage cans the city lines our street with for apartment use. More often than not, there’s garbage on the ground around them. This is so people can learn by example that it’s OK to just throw it down on the ground. There is one spot on Smith Street that has six plastic garbage cans for everyone around them to use. Maybe why there is more garbage on the ground is because these cans fill up with rain water. I feel sorry for the garbage men who deal with this. And don’t forget to enjoy the smell at these examples on our streets, especially when it’s warm. If you think about it, the age group abusing Norris Park consists of people who just want to be part of the Downing cruise scene. Just look at the trash that is left on the business parking lots on Downing after a night of cruising. It is not just skateboarders – it’s an age group that does not have to care because they know nothing will happen. All they have to say is, “I’m a minor.” Their parents are too busy to teach them to care, or it’s too much trouble to teach them to use a trash can. So you will not have any easy solution to the problems at Norris Park until everybody cares enough not to litter. Robert Land Tahlequah
