Rice a ‘foolish’ choice

Editor, Daily Press:

A Forum reader castigates Sen. Jim Inhofe for his “sleazy” political ads that shine the light of truth on his opponent’s voting record on issues important to Oklahomans. The facts, however, are clear: Rice did, indeed, vote twice against making reporting a false Amber Alert a felony, and against requiring six-time felons to serve at least 85 percent of their sentence. ...

This same writer continues to condemn Sen. Inhofe for his votes against raising the minimum wage, as if it is good for the federal government to dictate wages businesses must pay employees and making those in Tahlequah pay the same as those in New York or Los Angeles.

Also criticized was Inhofe’s votes said to be against body armor for troops and against veterans’ health care. In actuality, these votes were in cases where the relevant legislation contained undesirable features, such as a mandatory retreat from Iraq, or were larded with earmarks and other spending. There is no senator more devoted to our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and around the world and supportive of our veterans than is Sen. Inhofe. And he has the record to prove it.

He is also to be admired for his courage in recognizing Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth for what it is: a convenient lie. That carbon dioxide produced by human activity has increased global temperatures has yet to be scientifically proved, and forecasts of dire disasters are highly exaggerated by computer models that have been discredited by experts. A U.S. Senate report contains names of 400 recognized scientists who concur and a letter to the United Nations signed by 100 top climate scientists attesting to the fallacy. The outlandishly expensive proposals to address this non-emergency phenomenon of natural global warming, a slight rise of less than one degree in 10 years, is inappropriate.

As to his voting for deregulation of financial markets, the Democrat-controlled Congress did, indeed, pass financial market regulation and look what happened despite it. Isn’t it interesting that Sen. Inhofe voted against the current bail-out legislation and Andrew Rice is quoted as agreeing with him?

Sen. Inhofe has done much for Oklahoma and its citizens. Support of our military bases, getting our share of highway funding, and support for the Pitcher buyout, are just a few of his accomplishments. Replacing him with a liberal junior senator makes no sense at all and would be extremely foolish.

Orel C. Dugger

Editor’s note: Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America released its Congressional Report Card Tuesday, grading every member of the House of Representatives and Senate on votes that affected the lives of veterans and their families. Inhofe received a C.
