‘Homosexuality’ in scriptures

TAHLEQUAH — Editor, Daily Press:

I appreciate the letter from Amberly Hendrix in the June 25 Readers’ Forum. In it, she points out the inconsistency of many people who use the Bible to support their condemnation of homosexuality.

There are about 31,173 verses in the various English translations of the Bible. Only six or seven of those verses may be about homosexuality, although more recent scholarship questions whether the way we use the word “homosexuality” today is what was being described by the original biblical writers. This hardly makes a case against homosexuality.

None of the verses purported to be about homosexuality were spoken by Jesus. Jesus talked about a lot of things: neglect of the poor, abuse of the outsider, hypocrisy, the idolization of wealth, greed, self-righteousness, but never about homosexuality. In fact, in his parable that we sometimes call “The Last Judgment,” the only thing that appears to be important to Jesus is whether we have fed the hungry, visited the prisoner, given water to the thirsty, welcomed the stranger, tended to the ill, clothed those who do not have the resources to clothe themselves. The “judgment” question is, “How have you treated one another?” There is not one word about right belief or correct creed.

My daughter and her same-gender spouse are not “satanic.” They are active in their church, work hard and pay their taxes, and are making sure that their four daughters are learning the values of care and compassion. I think God enfolds them in God’s grace, just as God does even those who, without even having met them, have decided they are bound for hell.
