Men’s shelter could use a helping hand

TAHLEQUAH — Editor, Daily Press:

Our city has done a tremendous job of getting a wonderful shelter for women and children, of which we are to be justifiably proud. Everyone who was involved in this worthy project is to be commended; however, we also have a men’s shelter that has been ignored and is in desperate need of community support.

This shelter is over-crowded, dilapidated and about to fall down; there are holes in the floor, bare outside walls visible inside, very little insulation, poor heating, almost nonexistent air conditioning, and until recently, had the electricity coming from a pole in the yard and everything was run by two extension cords. Surely this city can do better than this for our less fortunate male citizens.

I have a list of needs that I am sharing with you: paper towels, toilet paper, laundry detergent, shaving cream, razors, shampoo, paper plates, plastic silverware, pillows, canned foods, bunk beds, light bulbs, brooms, mops, cooking utensils, and the list goes on.

Let’s all get behind this and prove what caring people we really are.
