Ridicule: Let’s dump ‘R’ word

TAHLEQUAH — Editor, Daily Press:

Most Americans have grown up through ridicule. Each of us develops an ability to endure mocks, taunts, insults, shame, contempt, jeers, and provocation directed at our physical appearance, the team we belong to, our clothing, our parents, choice of career, religious background, ranking, financial status, or sexual choices.

As a tradition, we easily sweep the effects ridicule has away as inevitably a part of the human condition, aka barbaric. “People have always been this way, and they will not change.”

However, if we look a little ways back we see this is not true at all. The “N” word is no longer acceptable vernacular, bullying is now an open discussion with school programs and the workplace, and open harassment of women will soon be a thing of the past.

Our ability to endure ridicule has changed just as social traditions have changed. The NFL team in question using the “R” word was established in 1932, and like other recent team names, theirs will change also.

Peace for the future.
