Pray for leaders, too

TAHLEQUAH — Editor, Daily Press:

Dave Thomas needs to be sure he is uttering facts, not claims, before he prays.

Before praying for America at the National Day of Prayer ceremony in Tahlequah Friday, May 2, Thomas, pastor of New Life Worship Center, announced, according to the Tahlequah Daily Press, that he had just learned members of the military can be court-martialed for sharing their religious beliefs.

Hardly new, the reference is to an Air Force publication of August 2012, which notes the need for government neutrality regarding religion. The publication states, “Leaders at all levels must balance constitutional protections for an individual’s free exercise of religion … and the constitutional prohibition against government establishment of religion.”

Military leaders must not use their position to “promote their personal religious beliefs to their subordinates or to extend preferential treatment for any religion.” No one has been court-martialed for violating these regulations – for which we should all thank God.

Thomas’ reference to members of the Muslim Brotherhood in President Obama’s cabinet was another bogus claim. It, too, is old, going back to 2009, and refers to an unsourced article in an Egyptian magazine. One of these so-called Brotherhood members was appointed by former President George W. Bush.

Reading the TDP article made me more aware than ever of the need to pray for our country – and some of its religious leaders.

What to you think of a state Legislature proposal to forbid cities from raising the minimum wage? Choose the closest to your opinion.

The federal government should set the minimum wage across the board.
States should be allowed to raise their minimum wages, but not cities.
Both states and cities should be allowed to raise their minimum wages.
Cities should be allowed to raise their mimum wages, but not states.
There should be no minimum wage at all.
