A Cherokee County man has filed a tort claim against the county's detention center, alleging he was assaulted by detention officers and denied medical attention.
Andrew "Drew" Heston Gladd, 22, claims he was arrested Sept. 27, 2007, by police officers and taken to CCDC. Officers at the facility are accused of hitting Gladd repeatedly, inflicting serious injuries and depriving the prisoner of his "constitutional rights and privileges."
The claim, filed by local attorney Jim Cosby on Gladd's behalf, states detention officers acted "recklessly and with callous disregard" of Gladd's rights.
Gladd was held overnight and allegedly denied medical attention, despite repeated requests for treatment. The tort claim asserts Gladd was denied "freedom from illegal confinement, physical abuse, coercion and intimidation and timely appropriate medical aid."
Gladd has incurred and will continue to have medical and hospital expenses, as well as lost wages and other employment opportunities. He also allegedly suffered physical and mental pain and injury, which is expected to continue into the future.
CCDC "recklessly trained, encouraged and allowed officers to disregard the rights of accused individuals" and implemented a policy to deprive individuals of their rights while in custody, the claim states.
Gladd is seeking judgment against the detention center in excess of $10,000, interest, court costs and other demands.
