Cherokee County prosecutors charged two men Monday in connection with an April 25 drive-by shooting incident involving traffic signs.
Jeffrey Wayne Wilson, 23, and Derek Shane Parks, 27, are charged with use of a vehicle in discharge of a weapon and a misdemeanor count of malicious injury to property.
The lesser count alleges Wilson, of Hulbert, and Parks, Tahlequah, damaged traffic signs by shooting at them. The damage to the signs is believed to be less than $2,500, which constitutes a misdemeanor.
The count of use of a vehicle in the discharge of a weapon is a felony, which alleges they fired a gun out of a moving vehicle, creating a danger to people. It is punishable by imprisonment for two to 20 years.
Wilson is charged with a separate count of attempting to elude on allegations he was driving the vehicle and would not stop for Cherokee County sheriff’s deputies. Deputies Bob Sanders and Waylon Tarkington are state witnesses.
Attempting to elude is punishable by imprisonment for up to a year and/or a fine of not more than $1,000. The malicious injury to property count carries a possible fine of up to $500 and/or imprisonment for up to a year.
