Police to hold fundraisers for special ops equipment Tahlequah police are in the formative steps of organizing a Special Operations Team for certain high risk situations and with having a team of that nature comes the cost of the equipment.
Police Chief Steve Farmer said team members will need the equipment before taking on too many assignments. Capt. Kenny Jones, who serves as team commander, said some of the members have some equipment. The department’s budget from the city administration does not include specialized equipment for the team and that requires the officers to purchase it with their own money and with donations from the community. Farmer said the team will host a car wash Saturday, June 16 from 9 a.m. until noon in the Wal-Mart parking lot. No set fee will be charged for washing cars. Farmer said Special Operations team members will be washing cars. “It may be one of the few times, the public gets a chance to have Kenny or some of the other guys wash their vehicle,” the police chief said. “It’s for a good cause so we hope a good crowd of dirty cars will show up.” Farmer said he and the team members are also hoping Mother Nature will cooperate and the rain will hold off until the car wash is complete. “This team is something that we believe is needed in Tahlequah and we hope the community will show it some support,” he said.
