Hulbert School Board members continued to gear up for the new 2007-'08 school year, approving several hires and new handbook policies.
According to Superintendent Wayne Ryals, the new school year began smoothly, and "everything has started off really well."
Chairman Kent Barnes led board members in detailed discussion of changes to the Hulbert Elementary Student Handbook. All members -- with the exception of Kathy Lenard, who was absent -- voted to approve the changes as discussed.
The board also approved a six-month contract with Tom Cameron of Tom Cameron & Associates, a school consulting firm. The firm would be hired to advise the board in matters of budget, board agendas, legal issues, personnel, etc.
"We would need clear guidelines spelled out in the contract as to what our expectations might be," said Barnes.
Cameron's consulting contract would begin at six months -- from Sept. 1, 2007 through March 1, 2008 -- and could be extended on a monthly basis, as deemed necessary by the school board.
In other matters, the board:
• Approved 2007-'08 transportation contracts.
• Hired Betty Smith as Johnson-O'Malley resource staff member for 2007-'08.
• Approved employment contracts for certified and support staff for 2007-'08.
• Agreed to enter into a cooperative agreement for Alternative Education between Hulbert Public Schools and Tahlequah Public Schools.
