Prosecutors charge Texas man with child abuse

Cherokee County prosecutors have charged a Jewett, Texas, man with child abuse and domestic abuse after an incident Oct. 17.
Steven Dale Mansfield, 40, is charged with hitting a 15-year-old girl in the head and saying he would hit her so much she couldn’t tell police. He faces a domestic abuse count for hitting Dana Mansfield on the same day.
Authorities allege Mansfield had carisoprodol, a skeletal muscle relaxant, without a prescription for the substance. A charge of possession of controlled drug without a prescription is punishable by imprisonment for up to a year. The child abuse by injury count is punishable by imprisonment for up to life or a year in the county jail and/or a fine of $500 to $5,000. Domestic abuse is punishable by prison for up to a year and/or a fine of up to $5,000.
