Man charged in standoff with officers

By BOB GIBBINS
Staff Writer

TAHLEQUAH DAILY PRESS

Formal charges were filed Monday against a Cherokee County man involved in a standoff last month with sheriff’s deputies and Cherokee Nation marshals.

Marty Lynn Blair, 42, was charged with two counts of feloniously pointing a firearm and single counts of reckless conduct with a firearm, obstructing an officer, resisting an officer, carrying a firearm while under the influence, and threatening to commit an act of violence. The charges were filed after an incident in the Etta Bend area that ended after several hours with Blair being shot after all attempts to coax him out of his home failed. Blair walked back inside his home with a rifle and refused to leave.

Deputies were summoned because Blair had allegedly fired at people in the area. Tear gas was fired into the house in an attempt to get him to leave, to no avail. Hostage negotiators also tried to talk Blair out of the house. Blair suffered a flash-bang wound to the lower part of his right forearm and gunshot wounds to the ankle, knee and shoulder by members of the Cherokee Nation Marshal Service Special Operations Team. His injuries were not life-threatening.

Each count of feloniously pointing a firearm is punishable by imprisonment for one to 10 years. The other counts are misdemeanor offenses.
