TAHLEQUAH — Remnants of last week’s winter storm and a temperature readings in the 30s didn’t stop a crowd of folks from gathering in downtown Tahlequah Thursday night for the annual Christmas parade.

Christmas lights lined the floats, but Thursday’s parade drew mixed reviewed from onlookers.

Liza Warren said she enjoyed the shorter parade, and not being out in the cold for two hours, which has been the case in recent years.

“It’s great to see so many businesses take time to prepare their floats, rather than throwing them together last minute,” Warren said.

One hot topic after the parade was Santa’s placement inside a truck, rather than on the sleigh. Organizers apologized but said they were unable to get the sleigh’s lights on. They worked on the problem until the parade began, and decided Santa might be better seen inside the truck.

Organizers had originally planned the event for last Saturday, but a round of winter weather that produced snow and ice delayed the event until Thursday. Only about 60 entries – about half the usual number – made it into the lineup Thursday evening.

“It was a great night, although cold,” said Tahlequah Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director David Moore. “We hated to reschedule the parade, but due to the weather last weekend, we had no other choice. With the reschedule, other events in town, and the cold weather, all contributed to having a smaller parade. However, the holiday spirit was there, and we wish everyone merry Christmas and a prosperous 2014.”

Santa’s Choice was awarded to the Friends of the Murrell Home float; first place in business was awarded to First State Bank; first in churches went to Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints; first in community/civic groups went American Legion Post 135; and first in the school category went to Shiloh Christian School.
