During Thursday’s regular meeting of the Keys Board of Education, members accepted the resignation of the elementary school principal and scheduled classes to make up for snow days.
Robin Gibson’s resignation as principal of the elementary school becomes effective June 30. Billie Jordan, superintendent, said the district will begin accepting applications for the position in January.
During new business, the board scheduled school days to make up for those lost to inclement weather. Keys schools are in session Jan. 20, March 13-14, April 18 and May 9. Additionally, parent-teacher conferences are March 12 from 3:30-7 p.m. Barring further cancellations, the last day of classes is May 16.
“If there are more snow days, we will need to make them up at the end of the school year,” Jordan said.
The board approved a May 20-25 Education First Explore America trip to Washington, D.C., and New York City for eighth grade students, led by Robbie Smith, elementary school counselor.
The board accepted the employment of Stephen H. McDonald & Associates, Inc. to obtain $249,000 for renovation projects through Qualified Zone Academy Bond lease-purchase financing. Concomitant resolutions were passed authorizing purchase document execution and actions to meet federal and state regulations associated with QZA bonds. Projects will be selected at a later date.
A referendum was approved which will allow eligible KPS employees to vote for participation in full Social Security benefits as provided under the Federal Insurance Contributions Act. Currently, employees do not pay Social Security premiums.
During the superintendent’s report, Jordan noted that there were three filings for the board seat held by Kevin Dudley. An election is scheduled Feb. 11. Dudley will not run for re-election.
Approval was given to schedule Keys Board of Education meetings on the second Thursday of each month during 2014. Exceptions are July 17 and a second June meeting on the 26th.
All votes were unanimous. Dudley was absent.
WHAT'S NEXT: The next regular meeting of the Keys Board of Education is Jan. 9 at 6 p.m. in the high school library.
