TAHLEQUAH — A 19-year-old Hulbert woman is free on her own recognizance after she allegedly broke into a Tahlequah church Saturday and began to stab the wall with a knife.

Shayna L. Simmons was booked into the Cherokee County Detention Center for second-degree burglary and destruction of private property.

According to Tahlequah Officer Cody Warren’s affidavit, police responded Saturday evening to the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Warren and Officer Thomas Donnell were sent to the church’s basement, where they found Simmons in the bathroom, standing with her back to officers and with a knife in her right hand.

Warren said Simmons was “repeatedly stabbing the wall” with the knife, and would not respond to officers when they told her to drop the knife. Officers eventually deployed a Taser on Simmons, and she was arrested.

An assistant pastor at the church said Simmons broke into the facility through a back door while the church was empty. Police said Simmons had chipped away chunks of concrete from the cinderblock wall of the bathroom where she was located.
