Pair snared after drugs found

TAHLEQUAH — Tahlequah police arrested two men Saturday after finding methamphetamine, syringes, pills and other drug-related items during a traffic stop.

Officer Cory Keele stopped a vehicle driven by 22-year-old Troy Duchesne, of Pryor, when Keele noticed the vehicle’s temporary tag had expired. Keele said he noticed that Duchesne was nervous and shaking.

Keele checked Duchesne’s license status through dispatchers, and when he was cleared, Keele told Duchesne he was free to go. Keele said Duchesne stayed and talked with the officer about some difficulties he was having in his life.

“I then asked Troy before he left if I could search his vehicle and he told me I could,” Keele said.

Kaleb Johnston, 22, of Rose, was in the front passenger seat and was asked to exit, along with a second passenger.

Keele searched the vehicle and found a syringe with a small amount of a clear liquid inside, under the passenger seat. According to Keele’s affidavit, he asked the three men whether any of them had medical problems, and then asked them about the syringe.

Johnston later approached Keele and allegedly said the syringe was his and said he used methamphetamine occasionally for work. Keele said he then asked all three men if they would empty their pockets onto the hood of his patrol unit, and Duchesne dropped a syringe and tried to kick it under the car.

Keele said Duchesne also attempted to hide a spoon that was covered with a white residue. Tahlequah Police Capt. Tom Jones assisted Keele in detaining Duchesne, who was handcuffed along with Johnston.

Duchesne then allegedly admitted to having a bag of meth residue and oxycontin pills in his pockets.

Keele said he searched Johnston’s pockets and found a smoking pipe that smelt of burnt marijuana, and then found a bag of marijuana inside Johnston’s wallet.

Duchesne and Johnston were transported to the Cherokee County Detention Center, with Duchesne being booked for possession of meth, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled dangerous substance without a valid prescription. Johnston was booked for possession of meth, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to Keele, detention officers found another bag with a white residue inside Duchesne’s pocket when he was being booked into jail.
