A Cherokee County man accused of child abuse by injury has entered a plea agreement in exchange for a suspended sentence.
Damon Ashley Shirrel, 32, of Rose, was accused of spanking a 12-year-old boy 20 times with a wooden paddle as punishment for lying.
Shirrel entered a no-contest plea this week and received a five-year suspended sentence, plus fines and other costs.
Shirrel was arrested earlier this year after the Department of Human Services contacted the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office about the allegations. Authorities said the spanking resulted in “severe bruising” on the boy’s body.
