School calendar adjusted by Tahlequah Public Schools board

Staff Writer

TAHLEQUAH — Tahlequah Public Schools Board of Education members voted unanimously Monday night to change the school calendar, based on recommendations of Superintendent Lisa Presley.

Due to the loss of eight school days to inclement weather, TPS will hold class on dates when they were initially scheduled to be out.

“This amendment to the calendar will help us get back some days of instruction we have lost,” Presley said. “With these changes, we still have a seven-day cushion in which to meet state requirements for instruction time. If we have more snow days and go beyond that, we will have to look at extending the school year.”

The calendar adjustment calls for changing Jan. 20, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, from a day of professional development for staff to a regular school day. Classes will also meet regularly on Feb. 28, which was initially scheduled as a late start.

March 13-14 are also regular school days, and parent-teacher conferences will be held from 4:30-7:30 p.m. March 11 and 13. School is also in session during regular hours April 18 and May 23.

Time was also scheduled for the board to discuss the resignation of Scott Pursley from Board Seat No. 4. Pursley was unchallenged in the most recent board elections.

“Pursley had filed for the seat, but it has come to light that he is related within the second degree to an employee of the district,” Presley said. “Therefore, he is not eligible for the seat.”

The seat, being vacated by Donna Tinnin, was to be filled Feb. 11. After Tinnin leaves, the board has 60 days to appoint someone for a one-year term or hold a special election. An appointment is anticipated, but after one year, the district must hold an election for the remainder of Tinnin’s term.

The board also heard the financial and child nutrition reports.

After executive session, the board was scheduled to approve the resignations of Bryon Smith, teacher, and Janice Randall, chief professional officer for the Boys & Girls Club of Tahlequah, and the temporary hiring of a teacher and a psychometrist.

The next regular meeting of the TPS board is 6 p.m, Monday, Feb. 10, in the conference room of the Tahlequah Board of Education building, 225 N. Water St.
