‘Teabagging’ flap lands accused perpetrator in jail

TAHLEQUAH — Cherokee County sheriff’s deputies say a 21-year-old Park Hill man was arrested over the weekend after he allegedly placed his genitals on a woman’s face when she passed out at a party.

Austin C. Maize was being held Tuesday on a $20,000 bond for sexual assault, indecent exposure and contributing to a minor.

Deputies said an 18-year-old woman and several other people attended a party with Maize Saturday on West 871 Road. When the 18-year-old woman began drinking alcohol, she became ill and later passed out on a couch in the living room of the home.

At some point, Maize was allegedly urged by friends to “tea bag” – or place his testicles on – the woman. One witness said she heard another person gasp, and when she turned to look, she saw Maize unzip his pants and commit the act.

Witnesses told deputies a friend interfered and helped take the woman to a car in an attempt to leave the party. Those who had urged Maize to commit the act allegedly began to harass the victim and her friend, and tried to block their vehicle from leaving.

Maize later spoke with deputies and allegedly denied he had rubbed his genitals on the woman’s face, but did admit he had exposed himself.

He also allegedly admitted he had been drunk at the party and had blacked out, and friends later told him about what had happened.
