TAHLEQUAH — The clock is ticking down to Christmas, and the shopping season is in full swing.

Most men have a distaste for shopping, and buying gifts for them can be difficult. Fortunately, local merchants have lots to choose from when searching for the perfect gift for men.

Anthony Hare, owner of Sooner TV and Electronics, said home theater systems are gaining popularity.

“There’s nothing better than a home theater system with a big flat screen TV,” said Hare. “It’s the key element when outfitting a man cave. Anytime you can marry audio with video, you’ve got it made.”

Hare said the store has a variety of systems to fit any budget and man cave. He also indicated touch-screen navigation systems for cars are hot this year.

“The younger guys enjoy getting touch-screens with built-in navigation, Bluetooth and MP3 players,” said Hare. “They can run down the road, driving safely while being able to talk while driving. On top of that, it makes it really nice because they have access to play movies for kids who may be riding in the car, as well as having hours of recorded music to listen to.”

Men who spend time hunting or working outdoors may appreciate gifts from Atwoods.

“We have all kinds of things for men,” said Atwoods Manager Kent Presley. “We carry recliners, electric smokers and turkey fryers. We can outfit a man from head to toe for just about any kind of work or play outdoors.”

Atwoods also carries gun safes, tool boxes and hunting equipment.

“We have all kinds of gun safes,” said Presley. “They make them to fit most budgets. We also have a full line of hunting gear and deer blinds.”

For men who enjoy video games and other gadgets, shoppers won’t want to miss making stops at Walmart, Gamestop and Game Exchange, as all three carry all the latest titles, as well a number of peripheral components, including controllers, headsets and memory cards.

Meigs Jewelry is often a favorite shopping spot for women’s gifts, but it also offers a number of items that appeal to men.

“Our Luminox watches are always one of the most popular men’s gifts,” said Chelsea Buttress, Meigs sales associate. “These watches are military issue - made for manly men and made to be tough.”

Meigs also carries a full line of John Henry pocket knives, which are made in the United States.

“The prices start at $275, but these are all limited editions, so they’re not mass produced,” said Buttress.
