Diamondhead to host Red Dirt music festival

By TEDDYE SNELL

TAHLEQUAH — Barbara and Kevin Kelly, owners of Diamondhead Resort on State Highway 10 on the Illinois River, have worked for years to create a fun, festival atmosphere. That includes floating, camping, swimming, as well as hosting a variety of musical guests.

This year, the resort has been selected to host the Medicine Stone music festival, featuring headliners Jason Boland and The Stragglers, Thursday through Saturday, Sept. 12-14.

Barbara said her husband, Kevin, knows a number of the performers, and the festival has been something they’ve worked on for quite some time.

“Kevin knows so many of the band people, between those who are scheduled to play here and those who have been here before, it just happened,” said Barbara. “We’ve been working on getting something like this together for the past eight years. The promoter for Jason Boland visited us recently and said, ‘Let’s do it.’”

The festival will feature music, food, camping, canoeing, rafting and floating.

Kelly said the lineup is huge, and includes Boland and his band, the Turnpike Troubadours, Todd Snider, Stoney LaRue, Cody Canada and The Departed, Grammy-nominated John Fullbright, the Red Dirt Rangers, Randy Crouch and Jason Eady.
