Man jailed in knife assault

TAHLEQUAH — Cherokee County sheriff’s deputies responded on New Year’s Eve when a man was cut multiple times with a broken bottle during an argument.

Leo Alan Murphy, 32, was ultimately arrested and jailed for assault and battery.

According to Sheriff’s Deputy Jarrick Snyder, deputies were sent to Garden Walk Apartments when Cory Gwin suffered cuts during a fight. Gwin had blood covering his chest, back and face, and told deputies he had been cut multiple times.

Gwin told deputies he was attacked by Murphy and a woman whom he couldn’t identify by name. Gwin was able to fight them off, but not before the woman cut him on the back. Witnesses claimed the female suspect, who had not been identified or arrested as of Thursday, used a broken bottle to inflict the injuries.

Gwin refused to be transported to a hospital.

Deputies later located Murphy, who claimed he had been elsewhere and would not initially cooperate with deputies. He was arrested, jailed, and later given a $2,000 bond, court records show. Murphy was still behind bars Thursday.
