HPS to fill two board positions

TAHLEQUAH — Hulbert Public Schools will seek to fill two seats on its board through an election slated for February.

Seat No. 1 is currently being held by member Curtis Medlen, who was appointed to the seat in September  Previous board member Marty Winn held seat No. 1, but resigned the position of deputy clerk when moving out of the district.

The filing period for the Hulbert Board of Education seats is Dec. 3 - 5, while the election will be held Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013. If needed, a second election will be held April 2, 2013.

Seat No. 3 is held by board clerk JuaNita Keener, who is coming to the end of the five-year term.

Board member Kathy Ritchie was presented with the Oklahoma School Board Association Excellence Award during Monday’s meeting.

“She has committed so many hours to training, and so when you reach certain levels, you get an award,” said Superintendent Dr. Marilyn Dewoody.

Other action included approving payment of a teacher retirement system offset from the 2010-2011 school year. Dewoody said teachers who were employed by the rural school district during the 2010-2011 school year will receive the payment.

A $12 per-hour stipend for trained school personnel to open the school’s old gym for community use of the cardio equipment purchased by the PEP grant was also approved.

Dewoody said community members wishing to access the gym for exercise can begin doing so in December. The tentative time and days for gym use are 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Hulbert High School Principal Brad Ferguson announced a college and career fair will be held at the school Friday, Nov. 16, from 1 to 3 p.m., and a meeting to discuss the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, is set for Jan. 16.

Ferguson said the students held a mock election in Gary Riley’s U.S. history class and President Barack Obama won re-election by a 75 percent majority.

He added the Hulbert Riders student newspaper can now be viewed online through a link found on the school district’s website at www.hulbertriders.com. The link can be found on the right-hand side of the webpage under the subhead labeled Parents/Students.
