Hulbert, TACO preparing for Christmas events

Staff Writer

TAHLEQUAH — With the holiday season approaching, details are being ironed for several events around Cherokee County.

Hulbert will hold its second Christmas Parade in tandem with the First Baptist Church. The parade marches Dec. 14 at 6 p.m. and travels along Main Street through downtown.

“We hope to have a turnout like we had last year,” said Hulbert Mayor Shirley Teague.

“I believe we had 41 floats. I went along and thanked everyone for their floats, and there were so many I thought there would be no one to watch the parade because they were all participating. But our town was packed.”

The theme for the 2013 parade is “Winter Wonderland.” Deadline for entries is Dec. 9, and cash prizes will be awarded afterward through a drawing. Parade entry forms are available at the city office at Main and Broadway Street.

An event this Saturday in Hulbert is Amanda’s Run, a 5K and fun run that begins at 9 a.m. at the First Baptist Church. The run is held in memory of Hulbert High School student Amanda Shankle, who lost her battle with leukemia in 2012.

Registration for Amanda’s Run opens at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday. Fee is $25 and T-shirts will be given away as supplies allow. For more information, write to Brigette Manes at brigettediane @gmail.com or find Amanda’s Run on Facebook.

Across the county, Tenkiller Area Community Organization is getting ready for its annual Christmas for Kids party. The event is Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. at the TACO building, 32247 S. 540 Road in Cookson.

Santa Claus will be in attendance as Christmas gifts are passed out to the children.

A Christmas party with carol-singing is also planned. Children and their families are invited to attend.

Cindy Ballew, TACO president, said kids often bring their older siblings, parents and grandparents.

The event is attended by children from schools in the Cookson area.

As part of its fundraising efforts, TACO will host its Community Thanksgiving Dinner on Saturday from 5-7 p.m. at the TACO building. Cost is $8 per adult and $5 per child. Proceeds support Christmas for Kids.
