Folks interested in buying fresh, locally-grown food or other handmade products gathered at Norris Park Saturday morning, for opening day of the 2013 Tahlequah Farmers’ Market.
The market, in Norris Park near the North End Entertainment District, will be open 8 a.m. to noon every Saturday through October.
Repeat customers Karen Cooper and Jim Roaix look forward to spending time at the Saturday event with like-minded folks, and always leave fresh bread or lamb or other products grown or raised in the area.
“We look forward to buying lamb and fresh vegetables,” said Cooper. “We’ve been coming about four or five years now. It’s great. It has music. It has great people to talk to. It’s a lot of fun, but you need to get up and out early on Saturday.”
There are nearly 30 local and area vendors expected to offer products this year, and Saturday’s market offered a taste of what’s to come. Roaix noted one vendor with which he looks forward to conducting business.
“Barefoot Farm, who was not here today, is my favorite. They produce just good organic, homegrown vegetables,” he said. “Hanging out with these people is like hanging around with a bunch artists. Because they are artists. Their gardening is an art form.”
Joyce Varner gets up early on Saturday during the farmers’ market season to make sure she gets her share of the fresh food.
“I like the goat cheese. I’m planning to get some of that,” she said. “[I’ve been coming to the farmers’ market] probably since the first one. I don’t come every week because I do other things, but I’ll look to come as often as possible when the season starts. There are other things that I’ll get that’ll be here later in the season like beets and eggplant - just whatever’s available.”
Elizabeth Montgomery-Anderson lives close by and walks with her family to the market to enjoy the experience and products.
“We’re religious about it. We do all of our produce shopping here all summer. We’ve been coming since the first year,” she said. “We live five blocks away, so we walk.”
