PEGGS – Representatives of Peggs Community Church are protesting a request by Dollar General’s parent company to sell low-point beer at a store near the church.

Dolgencorp LLC officials last week applied to receive low-point beer permits for all eight of the Cherokee County stores.

On Tuesday, Rex Henderson, pastor of Peggs Community Church, filed a protest against the individual request to sell beer at the Peggs Dollar General.

“We feel that the proximity of our church and [Peggs School] makes selling beer at this location inappropriate,” Henderson wrote in his protest.

In the court document, Henderson said Dollar General’s Peggs location is about 300 feet from the front entrance of Peggs Community Church and just over 500 feet from Peggs School property.

Henderson said Peggs Community Church has been at its location since 1983, while Dollar General opened in Peggs within the past year.

Court documents show the protest will be heard in Cherokee County District Court at 10 a.m. Sept. 5.
