Failure to return rental car prompts woman’s arrest

Special Writer

TAHLEQUAH — Cherokee County sheriff’s deputies arrested a woman last week for allegedly failing to return a rental car.

Deputy Chance Imhoff was sent to meet an employee of Hertz Rent-A-Car Thursday afternoon. The employee had located a 2013 Honda Accord that had been rented by Julie Christine Hicks, 23, of Tahlequah, on Jan. 10, 2013.

But Hicks, who was supposed to return the car on Jan. 11, never took it back.

Deputies said they checked the car and verified it had been reported stolen and did belong to Hertz.

They then approached Hicks and arrested her for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. Imhoff’s report of the incident indicates Hicks admitted she knew the car had not been returned on the correct return date.

Hicks was later released from the Cherokee County Detention Center on a $5,000 bond.

No formal charges have been filed.
