TAHLEQUAH — For people who love bugs - Volkswagen Beetles or vans or other models - the perfect event, organized by the Tahlequah Main Street Association and enthusiastic Volkswageneers, returns to downtown.

The OKsWagen Fest is Oct. 11-12. A Volkswagen parade, YolksWagen egg toss, the QuacksWagen Duck Race, and the ArtsWagen – a Volkswagen where kids and adults can express their artistic visions – are just a few of the activities included.

“Last year was supposed to just be a trial run to see if it could be successful,” said Jim Smythe, who suggested the festival to the TMSA in 2012. “We threw it together in three weeks. We had a great response and people even came from out of state. The general consensus of the people was that community involvement made the festival great.”

The festival is in the North End Entertainment District and Norris Park around the intersection of North Muskogee Avenue and Morgan Street.

Pre-registration is open until Oct. 4. Those who pre-register a vehicle can take part in the parade and the car show. Also included are a T-shirt and two tickets to the reception, dinner and entertainment.

Basic registration will be open Oct. 11 at 5 p.m. and Oct. 12 from 7-8:30 a.m. People with vehicles entered in basic registration receive a T-shirt and can participate in the parade and car show.

Registration is $25 for pre-registration and basic registration. Discount packages and add-ons are available.

OKsWagen begins at 5 p.m. on Oct. 11 with a swap meet in Norris Park. Registration and check-in will be open next to The Twig restaurant.

Pre-registered guests can attend the reception with beverages and hors d’oeuvres at 6 p.m. in the parking lot of The Branch restaurant and a dinner with brats and beer downtown.

Music begins at 8 p.m. at The Branch and is free to the public.

On Saturday, basic registration is at the Chamber of Commerce office on the northwest corner of North Water Avenue and East Delaware Street.

Check-in and lineup for the parade begins at 9 a.m. at Sequoyah Park. The 10 a.m. parade will move along Muskogee from the Choctaw Street intersection to Norris Park.

The car show is from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. and includes the ArtsWagen. YolksWagen is at 1 p.m. and QuacksWagen is at 2 p.m. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers.

“OKsWagen is a big deal, and it is going to continue to grow,” Smythe said.
