A Hulbert man remained behind bars Tuesday on allegations of first-degree rape.
Samuel “Sammy” C. Brave, 29, is held on an $80,000 bond.
Brave was arrested Saturday evening after a 16-year-old girl was found lying in a road west of Hulbert. The victim told police Brave and another man arrived while she was swimming, and Brave sexually assaulted her.
Investigators said the teen appears to have suffered several injuries during the alleged assault, and may have been hit in the head with a rock during the incident.
After Brave was arrested Saturday evening, he denied he had assaulted the victim, according to Cherokee County Undersheriff Jason Chennault’s probable cause affidavit. But when Brave was told the victim would undergo a rape exam, the suspect allegedly altered details of his story.
Chennault has also spoken to the second man who was allegedly involved in the incident, but that man told investigators he was drunk and couldn’t recall details.
Chennault has forwarded his report on the incident to the District Attorney’s Office, and prosecutors will now be tasked with determining what, if any, charges to formally file against Brave.
