TAHLEQUAH — Cherokee County sheriff’s deputies arrested a Haskell woman Tuesday morning after she allegedly gave them a fake name following a traffic stop.

Deputy Dexter Scott said Teresa L. Smith-Ellis, 48, first claimed her name was Wanda, and gave him a fake birthdate. Scott said dispatchers informed him the name and date of birth did not match.

When Scott again approached Smith-Ellis, she was talking on the phone, and asked the deputy to talk with the person on the other end because he needed his medicine. Scott said he spoke to the person, who told the deputy the real name of Smith-Ellis.

Smith-Ellis allegedly confessed she had provided the false name because she is wanted on outstanding warrants.

Scott booked her for the warrants and false personation to avoid arrest.

She was still being held in the Cherokee County Detention Center Wednesday with a $2,000 bond on child support, plus a hold for authorities in Garfield County.
