TAHLEQUAH — Two Peggs residents died Wednesday night after a head-on crash on State Highway 82 in Mayes County, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

Benjamin M. Morgan, 20, and Evelyn M. Hays, 43, both died from massive injuries.

Troopers said the two were both pinned in a 2009 Ford Focus for 1-1/2 hours or more.

A third person in that vehicle, Robert L. Shepherd, 41, of Peggs, was transported by medical helicopter to St. Francis in Tulsa, where he was treated and released, according to the OHP.

Troopers said the Ford Focus, driven by Morgan, was headed north on S.H. 82 when it met a 2010 Ford F-250 driven by Cooper S. Day, 47, of Tahlequah.

Day was driving south when he attempted to pass another vehicle that was turning right into a private driveway, troopers said. Day’s truck then struck Morgan’s car head-on.

Day refused treatment at the scene for a possible leg injury, an OHP report said.

Locust Grove Fire Department worked the scene of the crash along with OHP troopers.
