Ex-school board member set for plea

Staff Writer

TAHLEQUAH — A former Hulbert Public Schools board member facing child-abuse charges is set to receive a plea offer from prosecutors.

Court records show Assistant District Attorney Doug Dry is to make Rickey Dale Gassaway, 50, the offer. Gassaway was in court this week, but his appearance was rescheduled for March 4 at 9 a.m.

Gassaway was charged with child abuse by injury, reckless conduct with a firearm, and domestic assault and battery in the presence of a child in December. He was arrested in November by Cherokee County sheriff’s deputies after he allegedly assaulted his wife, and later pushed his son, hitting the teen in the hip and grabbing him by the neck.

When deputies arrived at the residence in Hulbert, Gassaway allegedly went into his home and began waving a shotgun. He later gave up the gun and was arrested.

Gassaway was eventually booked into the Cherokee County Detention Center on a $10,000 bond.

He apologized to the Hulbert school district and resigned his position on the school board after charges were filed against him.
